ROME -Matilde Lorenzi has died at the age of only 20 on Tuesday whilst skiing at the Alpin Arena Schnals Senales ski resort.

Lorenzi’s crash happened on the Gravand G1 piste when her skis separated apart and she lost control, falling onto the icy ground face first. At this point one of her skis came off and Lorenzi continued to slide down the mountain.

The coaches that were present intervened quickly doing all that they could to help her. Lorenzi was immediately transported to the hospital in Bolzano by helicopter, where tragically she died on Tuesday night.

So far, the investigations have shown that safety conditions on the track had been checked, and all protections were correctly placed.

The ministry of defence has led the condolences for this tragic loss. In a tweet on X, the ministry of defence, along with minister Guido Crosetto, expressed their “feelings of deepest condolences and embrace the family and colleagues of Corporal Matilde Lorenzi.”

The  Italian Winter Sports Federation also shared their condolences:  “President Flavio Roda has no words to express the tragedy being experienced by the entire Fisi, its coaches, athletes, teammates, the Federal Council and the entire staff. Fisi is in mourning, and extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends and all those who loved Matilde and will remember her forever.”

Lorenzi made her skiing debut four years ago. Last March she won a double Italian title in superG in the Overall and Youth categories. She had finished sixth in downhill and eighth in super-giant in the junior world championships in Chatel, France. She also boasted an 11th place in super-giant in St. Moritz in Dec. 2023 as her best finish in the European Cup.
